By Martin Schneider

Most of the articles on cash forecasting and liquidity management in treasury publications focus on technology. See for example our April newsletter and a gtnews article by Lisa Rossi of Deutsche Bank.

What we miss in these articles is the human factor. Based on our experience in coaching local finance staff, it is often difficult to include the new process into their daily work. Professional treasury staff in the group treasury adopt new processes easily but local people need time and coaching. Two considerations:

New software disturbs an existing process. Often, only some months after roll-out can old software be replaced or processes be adapted. It is simply too easy to install a new software.

Most of us in finance are extremely detail-oriented and introverts. When forecasting, we act as accountants and try to quantify the future. Liquidity planning is a guess though, so it needs some extravert brain cells. From our experience, it’s better make a guess and enter a rounded number than to calculate and spend hours of forecasting the future by cents.

In 2006, Matt, a regular young guy, posted videos doing a not very good dance in various Asian cities. He didn’t show any promise for sure. However, thanks to YouTube, Stride.gum, a prominent chewing gum company in the U.S., discovered him and asked him to take another trip around the world to make a new video.

Matt’s video, 14 months in the making, 42 countries, and a cast of thousands, has been viewed by over 42 million people.

Find out more…

The video: Stride Gum — Dancing Matt 2008” by StrideChewingGum, has been viewed by more than a million people.

The video has not only made Matt popular, it has put Stride.gum in the spotlight. The exposure is unprecedented!

It’s about thinking outside the box! There’s a whole world full of opportunities out there. How about having a geek open a bank account in various major cities around the world and video some of the hurdles he encounters?

Tomato turned 20 on May 5. During much of May 1992, I finalized all the legalities involved in starting a business and fine-tuned my vision and strategic goals – all this on the kitchen table in my apartment with just a telephone and PC.

To find out how things developed from there, check the milestones that led us to where we are now!

One crucial decision at the time was: What name would be symbolic and catchy for this company? Find out here what led to the name Tomato.

To celebrate our anniversary, we are planning various events in different Swiss cities including wine degustations, cooking classes, company visits and excursions on various lakes. The number of guests will be limited and different depending on the event.

We will email invitations to clients, friends and partners in the vicinity of any planned event and we’re looking forward to make our anniversary meaningful, exciting and inclusive!

Stay tuned!

Martin is especially impressed by the Swedish Nationalbank’s ethical guidelines posted at the top of their Corporate Governance policy for its simplicity and applicability for all kinds of ethical decision-making.

The Riksbank advises that „When one is faced with an ethical problem, it may be useful to ask oneself the following questions:

Would I consider it embarrassing or be concerned if my colleagues found out about this?

Is this something that could be perceived as an unfair benefit that I am receiving because of my position?

Could this in any way damage the Riksbank if it were published by the mass media?
